Professor Smith joined the faculty at MU in 2001. Professor Smith was an Assistant Professor for five years at Boston College Law School. She was hired to develop strengths in the areas of E-Commerce, intellectual property and the manner in which the two fields overlap.

She worked at several large law firms across the country, and she clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit before entering academic life. Professor Smith has made over 40 presentations on race and gender issues and technology law. She teaches Software Law, Introduction to Intellectual Property, International Intellectual Property, Digital Divide, Cyberspace Law, Patent Law & Policy, and Jurisprudence.
