- 7/21/08: The Legal Division of the Office of the Clerk, United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, has immediate openings for highly qualified, experienced attorneys to serve as staff attorneys to the full court. Salary range: $55,809-112,745. The Legal Division's principal responsibility is to recommend to the court the disposition of substantive and procedural motions, appeals decided without oral argument, and emergency matters. Staff attorneys conduct legal research, prepare legal memoranda, draft proposed opinions, and make oral presentations. Staff attorneys work closely and frequently with the judges and meet with three-judge panels in formal conferences twice a month to present their recommendations. Staff attorneys also present their recommendations orally to the judges in chambers when handling time-sensitive emergency motions. Positions are full-time, 2-year terms with limited extensions available. Selected applicants will serve a one-year probationary period. Qualifications: The caseload of the D.C. Circuit involves virtually every area of federal law, and is unique in the number of cases filed against the executive branch. Because staff attorneys must be able to advise the judges on difficult, varied, and important legal issues, the court is highly selective in its hiring. The court is looking for individuals who have the ability to analyze complex legal issues quickly and to express themselves clearly, both orally and in writing. At a minimum, applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be a member of the Bar of a state or the District of Columbia, and have at least 1 year of relevant experience after graduation from law school. - 6/16/08: Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is seeking a full-time staff attorney to work in its Immigrants' and Language Rights Center. The position will have 3 components: 1) the attorney will supervise a new centralized intake project for limited-English proficient (LEP) clients; 2) the position will entail providing substantive legal advice and representation to immigrant and LEP clients, primarily in the areas of immigration law and language access; 3) the position will involve outreach and education among community and client groups, other service providers, and the private bar. The purpose of the Immigrants' and Language Rights Center is to ensure that LEP clients have equal access to the services provided by the program, in spite of the language barrier. In this respect, the attorney position will supervise centralized intake for limited English speakers for all its offices and special projects. Second, the Center also provides direct representation to clients throughout the state in specialty areas which are of concern to LEP clients, such as immigration law and language access. This position will be located in Indianapolis but will be part of the state-wide Immigrants' and Language Rights Center. - 5/28/08: The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit is accepting applications for current and future Staff Attorney positions on an ongoing basis. These are 2-year appointments in the Atlanta, Georgia office. The Staff Attorneys' Office is a central legal staff, serving the Court at large rather than individual judges. The principal task of the office is to assist in the disposition of appeals through the preparation of legal memoranda. Types of cases the office presently handles include (1) direct criminal appeals involving sentencing guidelines and guilt/innocence issues, (2) social security and black lung appeals, (3) all pro se appeals, including collateral attacks on criminal convictions by state and federal prisoners, and civil rights suits under 42 U.S.C.1983, (4) employment discrimination cases, and (5) immigration cases. The California office's docket focuses on cases addressing environmental problems in cities and wildlands, with a special focus on the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sierra Nevada, and the Central Valley. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are essential. The successful applicant will work closely on a daily basis with Judge Kennedy and 2 law clerks.
