Most legal employers are reputable and reliable, but the Career Development Office is not in a position to guarantee the professional standing of individual law firms, attorneys, companies or other employers posting position notices. Applicants should research potential employers as part of the job search process.

  • 7/24/08: The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit is looking for smart, hardworking lawyers or recent law school graduates to serve in 2-year clerkships as staff attorneys in St. Louis beginning in August 2009 or earlier. Staff attorneys work under the direction of the Senior Staff Attorney for the court as a whole, primarily preparing legal memoranda and proposed per curiam opinions for cases in which a party is proceeding without an attorney, and for counseled cases that are decided by the court on the briefs. Candidates should excel in legal research and analysis, and should be superior writers who wish to become better writers. Candidates must be willing and able to work with an editor. A demonstrated commitment to justice is desirable. Minimum qualifications for a CL 27, Step 25 level (currently $54,494) are graduation with a J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school, and one year of specialized experience, which may be satisfied by superior academic performance in law school. Candidates with experience may be placed at a higher level. Qualified candidates are eligible for future promotion.   • 7/24/08: The Missouri Public Service Commission is seeking an attorney for the position of Regulatory Law Judge. This is a quasi-judicial, administrative law judge position that requires the ability to preside over adversarial hearings which may last from 1-15 consecutive days on the record, which will routinely involve from 10-80 complex economic, engineering, and accounting issues, which include a minimum of 3 but often more than 10 or 12 adverse parties, and in which the amount in dispute will often be millions of dollars. In addition to presiding over complex litigation, the successful candidate will independently control a docket of cases from the Telecommunications, Electric, Gas, Water and Sewer industries and review extensive pleadings, written expert testimony, briefs, and other case-related documents in the preparation of final Commission orders. The judge must work effectively within a panel of 7 other judges and for a 5-member Commission. This requires the ability to provide sound legal analysis and well-drafted documents under demanding deadlines. Qualifications: 5 years of experience in administrative law, regulatory law or government practice is required. Starting salary range: $55,548, with a potential increase following successful completion of a probationary period.   • 7/14/08: The Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions, and Professional Registration seeks a Legal Counsel to the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Salary Range: $45,000-50,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The primary duty of this position will be to litigate cases before the Administrative Hearing Commission. Other duties: 1) provide Board and administrative staff with general legal counsel on regulatory matters and the administration of the board; 2) insure compliance with federal and state laws regarding programs; 3) provide legal counsel to board and its advisory committees and commissions to insure compliance with laws affecting day-to-day operations of a government agency, ranging from personnel and budget issues to Sunshine Law requests; 4) draft complaints, settlement agreements and orders as directed by Board; 5) serve as Legal Advisor to the Board in Disciplinary Hearings; 6) coordinate work with Department and Division Counsel, contract counsel and Attorney General’s office; 7) perform other related duties as assigned.
