| The Tiedeman
Inn was formed on February 18th, 1890. Over the past 116 years nearly
two-thousand members have joined our Inn.
The namesake of our Inn is Christopher
Gustavus Tiedeman. Professor Tiedeman was a law professor at the University
of Missouri from 1881 until 1891. In 1891, Professor Tiedeman traveled
east to join the faculty at New York University. While at MU, Professor
Tiedeman made his name as one of the most influential scholars in Law and
Economics, Constitutional Law, and Property. Tiedeman's 1886 work, Limitations
on the Police Power, played a critical role in spreading the "Liberty
of Contract" doctrine throughout the United States and ultimately up to
the US Supreme Court in the Lochner decision. Since his death over
a hundred years ago, many dozens of books and journal articles have been
written detailing Professor Tiedeman's vast influence in the formation
of American jurisprudence.
Professor Tiedeman was just one of
many prominent members of our local Inn. Our Inn also has been home to
many prominent lawyers, judges, at least one Governor and at least one
US Represenative. Congressman Ike Skelton, one of the leading democrats
in the US House of Representatives, is a member of our Inn. |
