Hi! My name is Beverly and I am currently in my first year at the University of Missouri Law School. I was born and raised in St. Louis city and attended Webster Groves High School. After high school graduation I couldn't get out of the Midwest fast enough and I headed straight to Boston University. I graduated in Dec. 2003 with a degree in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations. While at BU I participated in a Big Sibling mentoring program, Student Food Rescue (distributes food to local shelters and soup kitchens), and worked as a catering manager. I absolutely loved living in Boston; I lived just 3 blocks from Fenway Park on the banks of the Charles River and a short subway ride to the historic North End. During my junior year I returned to St. Louis to work as a Field Coordinator on a Senatorial campaign and than participated in Semester At Sea and traveled around the world for best 105 days of my life!
With all that love for Boston, it may seem odd that I am now in Columbia. But I promise, it makes sense! After graduation I wasn't sure what I wanted to do next, so I took some time off to work. I was a manager at Crate and Barrel in St. Louis, as well as helping to open stores in Kansas City, Indianapolis and Detroit. After a few holidays working in the fast paced retail world, my respect for retail workers grew immensely, and so did my desire to go back to school!
I took a long time to decided on a school; I looked at law schools on the east coast as well as in the Midwest. I wanted to be near my family (but not too close!), be in an environment where I felt supported and have access to a wide array of activities. I went on a lot of school visits and when I finally came to see Mizzou, I knew it was the school for me. Everyone I spoke to seemed genuinely interested in what I had done and what I had hoped to do after entering law school. Never before had I experienced so many people offering to help me and give me advice, even if the advice might have steered me to make another choice than MU. Now that I am in the middle of my first year, I am more confident than ever that I made the right choice. In addition to being a student ambassador, I have joined the American Bar Association, Black Law Student Association, Sports Law Society and competed in competitions sponsored by the Student Board of Advocates. The professors, faculty and other students are always available to help; whether you have questions about a particular reading, want to organize a happy hour or just need a band-aid! Everyone is here for you!
If you have any question about the law school, Columbia or anything else, feel free to email me at Choosing which law school to go to is a HUGE decision, so please ask a lot of questions and go visit as many schools as you can.
