The Missouri Board of Law Examiners encourages law students to file an Application for Character and Fitness Report as soon as they begin law school. The earlier students file, the lower the application fee. Once students begin the 3L year of law school, they can no longer seek an early Character and fitness determination and instead must submit the Application for Character and Fitness Report concurrently with the Application for Bar Examination.

Students who submit their Application for Character and Fitness Report on or before the June 30 after the 1L year will pay $200 to so file.   Law students who file their application after the June 30 of the 1L year will pay $425 to so file.

Example:  Mary, Jack, & Susan begin their 1L year on August 30, 2009.  Mary files her Application for Character and Fitness on December 30, 2009.  Jack files his on July 1, 2010.  Susan does not decide to sit for the Missouri Bar until the September of her 3L year.

Mary will pay $200 to file her Application for Character and Fitness.  Jack will pay $425 to file his.  Susan cannot submit an early Character and Fitness determination and must file it concurrently with her Application for the Bar Examination.  Susan will follow the directions established in the filing deadlines of Missouri Supreme Court Rule 8.07.

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is required for admission to the Missouri Bar as well as to the bar of many other states. The examination is given in Columbia three times per year and may be taken prior to graduation. Registration forms may be obtained in Room 203.
